THE FLORIDA KEYS INTERNET GUIDE |
THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD CUTTER BIBB is located just south of Molasses reef and was intentionally sunk as part of the artificial reef program. Initially, the vessel was "diver safe" (dangerous areas were sealed off), however, some of the safety features have been circumvented by divers causing the dive to be more hazardous. The vessel is in excess of 300 hundred feet long and rests in the sand facing in a northerly direction on its starboard side. You first encounter the Bibb at about 95 feet. The bottom side of the wreck is at about 120 feet. It is a popular hangout for large grouper, barracuda and countless other species. Since the wreck is located so near the gulfstream, currents are strong and visibility is usually superior. Due to its depth and the strong currents, it is recommended that only experienced divers with advanced training dive this site.
