NINE
FOOT STAKE - named for the metal piling protruding above the surface, it is an
often overlooked dive site because of the average 20' foot depth. The shallow water offers
excellent photo opportunities and is a great dive for beginners as well as a good place to
off gas after a deep dive on the Cayman Salvager. Typical spur and groove coral of the
Keys' reefs are predominant here. Some of the highlights include six foot diameter brain
coral and the remnants of a ranger marker (small light house) with 50 foot piling
scattered over several hundred square feet. Large barracuda act as sentinels of the
lighthouse of a bygone era. Southern sting rays share the sand patches with the
yellow-headed Jewfish. KEY WEST
