THE FLORIDA KEYS INTERNET GUIDE

NINE FOOT STAKE - named for the metal piling protruding above the surface, it is an often overlooked dive site because of the average 20' foot depth. The shallow water offers excellent photo opportunities and is a great dive for beginners as well as a good place to off gas after a deep dive on the Cayman Salvager. Typical spur and groove coral of the Keys' reefs are predominant here. Some of the highlights include six foot diameter brain coral and the remnants of a ranger marker (small light house) with 50 foot piling scattered over several hundred square feet. Large barracuda act as sentinels of the lighthouse of a bygone era. Southern sting rays share the sand patches with the yellow-headed Jewfish. KEY WEST
